Slot Canyons of the Colorado Plateau
for immediate release...

Water Holes Canyon by M. Lacy Mark Lacy will discuss safety in slot canyons and offer photography tips on Monday, June 12, 2000 at 7:00 pm as part of REI's free weekly travel workshops.

Dramatic slot canyons in the northern Arizona and southern Utah region entice adventurers and photographers. They should be explored with caution. Distant and sudden storms can flood the narrow gorges with powerful currents of water draining from the surrounding desert. Many of the canyons are on the Navajo Reservation where Navajo Nation laws apply to all visitors.

The slide presentation will explore the geology of the Colorado Plateau and briefly survey the prehistoric Anasazi culture of the area. Sites discussed will include: Antelope Canyon, Water Holes Canyon, Paria Canyon, Zion Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Chaco Canyon and Homol'ovi State Archaeological Park.

The presenter has lead adventure travelers to cultural and scenic destinations in the Southwest and Mexico with his travel series Lost Dutchman Expeditions, and Expediciones Fotograficas de los Barrancas y los Rios. His groups have wandered deep in Copper Canyon to the Satevo Mission and across Alamo Canyon to the Shrine of the Stone Lions.

Mark Lacy has previously given presentations at REI, including "Mexico's Copper Canyon", "Below the Rim: Chiricahua" and "A Survey of the Southwest". He will co-present "Two Inner Canyon Adventures in Copper Canyon" with Dan Coats later in the summer.

Mark Lacy is a professional photographer with extensive experience in university promotion, travel and journalism. He is the founder of the Houston Institute for Culture.
